In about a month from now the largest festival in Sweden, Peace & Love, will open gates on their 14th year of bringing worldwide attention to the small worker town of Borlänge in the heart of the country. With 50 000 festival goers 2011 Peace & Love is confident of another record year, never straying from their grass root concept of combining world class music with a lineup of influential speakers to raise awareness and to bring a positive change to the world.

This years line-up headlined by Rihanna sees a growing amount of North American acts, including Regina Spektor, Skrillex, Basia Bulat, My Morning Jacket, M. Ward, The Pains Of Being Pure at Heart, heavier acts Clutch, Hatebreed and of course a substantial amount of local artists with international success such as Niki & The Dove, Icona Pop, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Caviare Days, and many more…

SPEAKERS

Peace & Love have since the very first year in 1999 kept true to the founding mission, to manifest against violence and racism. The main message to festival-goers is to “use your heart and your brain, not just your ears”.

With 2012 edition of speakers to be announced, Peace & Love have for many years brought influential speakers to the festival, with last years speech by Jesse Jackson after a Bob Geldof performance as a prime example, and Malcolm McLaren being another noteworthy speaker at the festival.

PEACE & LOVE HAVANA

Peace & Love who doesn’t describe themselves primarily as a festival, but as an “inspirer of good ideas from the heart of music”, connected through a visit by popular Cuban artist X-Alfonso with the background and the spirit of cultural workers on Cuba. They decided to start a Peace & Love branch in Havana, which saw it’s first festival take place in 2010.

Different conditions of life, different music, different audiences and different languages was by many seen as obstacles, but Peace & Love saw it as an immense source of mutual learning and inspiration.

With X-Alfonso – also a UNICEF ambassador and curator of Cuban youth music activities – as the artistic director, the festival have now been held three years in the center of Havana, with very low ticket costs so the public can afford to visit the arrangement (20 Cuban pesos, about 1$). Revenues go to supporting cultural projects in Havana and the survival of the festival. Peace & Love Havana 2011 had 17 000 visitors and hosted artists such as Swedish Looptroop Rockers, Familjen and Cuba’s most famous singer/songwriter Carlos Valera. Peace & Love Havana 2012 took place 9-10 March, grew to 25 000 visitors and moved location to the famous ‘El Morro’ fort at the port of Havana. The line-up included Swedish artists Promoe, Timbuktu and again Carlos Valera and naturally X-Alfonso.

THE WORLD OF PEACE & LOVE

Welcome to the world of Peace & Love – a world filled with love, music, friendship, follies, understanding, diversity and inspiration.

Three friends in Borlänge who had enough of crime, drugs and violence in their environment decided to draw attention to the good of the city while doing something to contribute to a better world. In the summer of 1999 they asked a number of bands to perform for free and to play for a very small audience. The revenues were donated to charity. Peace & Love was born.

Over the years the festival grew slowly, without ever losing touch with its roots or its founding mission. Peace & Love 2011 had 50 000 visitors, 8000 workers and around 650 journalists covered the festival.

Every year Peace & Love gather around a new theme linked to the general message of the festival. 2012 artist line-up is booked by the theme “A New World”.

Around 220 artists and speakers are booked for Peace & Love every year. Some of who have previously participated in the festival are Bob Dylan, Jay-Z, Patti Smith, The Strokes, M.I.A., Deadmau5, Jesse Jackson, Hanoi Rocks, Iggy & The Stooges, Bob Geldof, John Fogerty, Manu Chao, Volbeat and Robyn.

An important part of the festival is the program called Peace & Love Forum. This is the general name of the Peace & Love meeting place for inspiration, discussions, conversations, feelings and messages. Here is where the invited personalities hold speeches, gets asked questions and creates dialogues.

The program includes besides music also art, theater, stand-up comedy, dance and performance art. There is also a private festival for children – the Children’s Peace & Love – that go on for 3 days.

Peace & Love is more than a festival. It is also:

• A festival of classical music, Peace & Lovestrings.

• A charity organization called Peace & Love Foundation.

• A publishing company, record label, management and a booking agency called Peace & Love Artists

• A year-round open cafe in Borlänge, with ecological products, called Cafe Peace & Love.

Åsa Jacobsson & Håkan Åkesson of Nutid

…beautiful new instrumental album, Cityflowers [...] seems to beg for a film, which makes sense, since the group, comprised of Swedish indie veterans Håkan Åkesson and Åsa Jacobsson, call Cityflowers ‘a mishmash of Belle Époque, the ’60s, a silent horror movie and a suburban shopping mall. It’s more or less a soundtrack to the movies that only exists in the mind of the listener.’ Pick a song on Cityflowers and maybe it’ll evoke a certain memory, scoring the mental scene with gentle piano or harmonica or accordion with bustling drums, but maybe it’ll beg for a new one, pointing to new emotions you haven’t experienced but need to find a way to.” – THE FADER

Nutid consists of musicians/composers Åsa Jacobsson and Alf Håkan Åkesson, both well known on the Swedish indie/pop scene. Åsa has been playing with Frida Hyvönen, Anna Ternheim, Peter Bjorn & John and Håkan has previously released four solo records as Alf, had songs placed in films such as ‘The Girl With The Dragoon Tattoo’, ‘In America’ and more.

In 2009 Nutidʼs debut “S/T” got great reviews for it’s unique blend of melodic, cinematic ʻpocket symphoniesʼ. This time the production is a bit less minimalistic and lo-fi. “Cityflowers” is a melodic journey through twelve different soundscapes, the perfect soundtrack to your summer!

Edda Magnason – Photo: Johan Tholson

Swedish/Icelandic Edda Magnason released her second album, Goods, (Adrian Recordings) last year to worldwide critical acclaim:

…I see a comparison to songbird extraordinaire Kate Bush…” – Listen Before You Buy
Goods’s psychedelic jazz pop is a joy…” – The Arts Desk
…we’re taken out on a sailing trip over rolling waves…” – Nordic Music Blog

It was also announced that she will be playing the leading role in a major film project about the Swedish all time great jazz singer Monica Zetterlund. The filming is taking place right now, but just before she went into the actor bubble, she recorded a one off track that we now are releasing in one of our most interesting concepts up to date.

The release has one baring concept line in form of a musical ”Chinese whisper” and some bonus features – where the original song produced by Familjen has been remixed in three ‘phases’ by Vidderna (Niklas Tjäder of Korallreven), NIVA, and finally legendary disco and techno producer Justus Köhncke.

‘Jona’ + Remixes out TODAY – premiered by FILTER Magazine

FILTER premiere of ‘Jona’ – read the full story by Adrian Recordings:

Edda Magnason went into the studio with long time friend and mega electro pop star Familjen in the producer’s chair. Together they recorded her track ‘Jona’. That’s the first track of the release.

Instead of adding the usual 2 or 3 remixes of the track we started a “Chinese whisper”. We asked Vidderna to do a remix of the original track and then we asked Niva to do a remix of the Vidderna remix, without hearing the original, last Justus Köhncke remixed the Niva remix without having heard either the original or the Vidderna remix. It all became a musical “Chinese whisper” going from Famijens nearly Portisheadish sound to deep underground German techno from Justus Köhncke. This creates the EP Jona by Edda Magnason.

1. Edda Magnason – Jona
The original track is produced by fluorescent Swedish electro star Familjen. Best known for his worldwide hit Det snurrar i min skalle. In 2012 he will release his 3rd album.

2. Edda Magnason – Jona (Vidderna Remix)
Vidderna is the name of Niklas Tjäder. Deeply associated with the progressive disco sound of Malmö. He is also a live musician with Korallreven. Now touring the world.

3. Edda Magnason – Jona (Vidderna Remix) (Niva Remix)
Niva is Sweden’s new contribution to the more danceable chill wave scene. His singles and remixes are floating around the web with high remarks in big magazines like Line of Best Fit and Pitchfork. He will release his debut album in 2012.

4. Edda Magnason – Jona (Vidderna Remix) (Niva Remix) (Justus Köhncke’s BLAX OMEN Remix)
Finishing of the release is the legendary German disco and techno producer Justus Köhncke. Nowadays best known for his work for the German techno label Kompakt, but even before that he was a big star on the European electronic scene as a member of the trio Whirlpool Productions that had a big hit with From Disco to Disco. In later days he has collaborated with Can’s Irmin Schmidt and been drawn to a more krautish sound. Here, however, he delivers a warehouse underground techno banger.
In addition to this Nisse Axman has made moving graphics, let’s call it videos, to the full release.

And as bonus features we throw in Edda’s demo version of the track, also recorded by Familjen though. When we asked pop sensation Simian Ghost to make a Adrian Recordings Advent Sunday Mixtapes he mashed up the Vidderna remix with a track from Den svenska tystnaden called Du ser träd and all of a sudden we had yet another fine bonus track to this release. You’ll find them all online at www.adrianrecordings.com.

The sister duo Caviare Days consisting of Swedes Lina & Maja Westin, back home dubbed as the next big thing by a unison force of Swedish press and radio, where just in New York to live soundtrack the Michael Bastian GANT fashion show at New York Fashion Week and decided to give North America another treat with their new video ‘You’ll Qualify’. Premiered this friday by Spinner:

…modern re-imagining of the groovy summer of love, I’m-seeing-trails-man music of the late-’60s…” – SPINNER

Enjoy the video and also read below a Caviare Days chat with us about the time they lived in in Brooklyn, working with Jorge Elbrecht of Violens, tying friendships with local indie heroes Chairlift, MGMT, and about their general inspiration leading up to what Caviare Days is today.

Why did you take your band name from a F. Scott Fitzgerald novel?

“I (Maja) was reading Tender is the Night and picked up the words ‘caviare days’ because of its literary qualities. I thought it was a beautiful and clever way to refer to an era in just two words, and immediately portray it. Not intended specifically to become a band name, it sort of stuck around and after a while Lina picked it up too and suggested we should use it for our music. It is related to our music in the way that the name carry the same connotations that we want our music to do. There is Mystery and Passion, an intellectual lifestyle that is spiritual yet beautifully decadent.”

Is there any specific time area that influenced your music? Which one and why?

“Every era has its caviare days, even though it was originally describing rich Russians hanging out on the French Riviera in the 1920s. Every such time period, where there is an abundance of art and music, a kind of Enlightenment for each new generation, is a time era that is influential. Every time era refers back to another, and ultimately, back to nature, so it’s really hard just to pick one. However, the late 1960s sure has a major influence on our music, that is hard to get away from. That can also be due to the fact that a lot of our favourite instruments were made popular during these days, like the Rickenbacker Guitars.”

How has being sisters influenced your creative process?

“Being sisters is convenient in a way, because there are certain things that you don’t really need to explain to each other, you just know. Like taking Caviare Days as a band name, something in its meaning was just understood, while it can be a little harder to explain to someone else. You just have the same reference board. Another things is that we’re used to each others voices, in that way we always know the best way to arrange a song, we know what fits the both of us, and what doesn’t.”

So, then what fits you guys best? Describe your sound.

”Our sound has this kind of airy, melodic feel you’d find in early Californian rock’n'roll, but there are a lot of other musical influences that have shaped our sound too, like Swedish folk, old hymns or classical music. In many ways, our sound is very cinematic, as every song is made up of stories that need to be visualized. Psychadelia is usually a tag we use because it is a way to describe the transcendental parts of our songs, lyrics and music must really blend into each other to take you all the way. Our sound is honest, too, it’s straight.”

How did your time spent in Brooklyn influenced your music?

“At the time we were there to record our first songs in 2009, we were actually in Chelsea most of the time, however, Brooklyn has some of the best venues for shows, like Music Hall of Williamsburg. A funny coincidence was seeing Violens, Jorge’s band, open up for The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, before we knew we were going to tour with them. I also remember seeing the Horrors in 2009 and now they’re all over the place. At the time of November 2009, we were actually rehearsing with some friends in a basement near Morgan Ave, and planned our first gig on Zebulon, Brooklyn for January 14 2010, but we couldn’t return to make it happen, so we decided to start up the band in Sweden instead. For a while, and maybe still, when people talk about Brooklyn in terms of music, they usually mention MGMT, Chairlift, Acrylics, etc. which are all bands that we’ve met in one way or another, specifically, since they’re also friends with Jorge. It’s just a network, where people involved in the same things help out, I guess.”

Late night bike riding and endless love for retro synthesizers inspired Ester Ideskog to compose synth heavy electro pop hits under her new alias Vanbot.

Vanbot has been making music since the early teen years and was constantly searching for the right sound, but she often found herself a little too sprawling. After the completion of “Bitter is the sweetest part” her music finally found it’s voice. In the little studio with the over-sized world map Vanbot’s dreams can fly freely to compose electronic soundscapes inspired by synthesizers and drum machines.

All material is written by Vanbot herself and produced by companion Sebastian Forslund who also worked with Swede indie artists I Break Horses, Blackstrap and Loney, Dear.
Her self-titled debut album was released last spring and followed by a remix EP with work from Niva, Fear of Tigers and Bremen. Being heavily praised in Europe Vanbot is now hitting US with NYLON Magazine loving her latest single, her next coming shows at SxSw with fellow Swedes Niki & The Dove, Serenades plus opening for legendary Roky Erickson – presented by FILTER, Peace & Love Festival, Bilda and Export Music Sweden.

Got To Get Out” is about my hometown Stockholm and how it’s filled with people experiencing a sense of isolation and separation, how it makes you feel lonely in a crowd. It’s fascinating that people can live so close together without really noticing one another.” – Ester Ideskog / Vanbot

MP3 TO SHARE

Finnish indie pop stalwarts Jessika Rapo (vocalist for Le Futur Pompiste) and Henry Ojala (ex-drummer for Cats on Fire) teamed up to form the shambly, synthy duo Burning Hearts in 2006. Burning Hearts’ debut full-length, Aboa Sleeping, was released 2009. It received a warm welcome and made it to the top albums of 2009 on many music blogs. Burning Hearts followed up the drop with a passel of live shows in Hamburg, Berlin, Stockholm and New York City.

After releasing two singles in 2010, “Night Animal” (featuring A peasant’s dream Jori Hulkkonen remix) and a cover of Arthur Russell’s “The Letter”, the duo decamped to the Finnish countryside in Ostrobothnia and recorded a four song EP, Into the Wilderness released in June 2011.

The second full-length album, “Extinctions”, will be released in February 21st, 2012. If the debut was a collection of early songs that were not intended to end up on an album, “Extinctions” was written as a consequence of many tragical stories that touched the band. Most of the songs are dedicated to persons or creatures that no longer exist.

Even if human tragedies inpired the writing and death is present in nearly all the songs, the sound remains vivid and full of hope.

Ladies and gentlemen – introducing MA by Ariane Moffatt: Out February 27th on Audiogram, the acclaimed Quebec songbird is now reinventing herself, delving into uncharted electro-pop territory and reaches new heights with the boldest, brightest songs of her career. ‘In Your Body‘ is released today, a track from the coming album that evokes Goldfrapp meets the B-52s with its shuffle-step beat, jazzy synth stabs and sassy lyrics.

…a woozy synth-drenched ode to sex addiction” – SPINNER

MA is, in a way, Ariane’s most personal work. The title comes from the Japanese concept of the ma, which refers to a sensorial experience of negative space or downtime – not as something that separates but rather something that unites. A quiet place allowed her to make an album that is both totally centered and wildly adventurous. MA is written, performed and produced completely by Ariane herself; in her creative space, at studio Planet and at Montrealʼs Hotel2tango studio (Arcade Fire, Barr Brothers, Handsome Furs).

Working both in French and in English felt natural for Moffatt, who lives in Montrealʼs diverse Mile End neighborhood. She has dabbled in the language before; but by recording more than half her new album in English, she positions herself in the ma between her cityʼs two dominant cultures. And she sounds equally at home in each.

BIO
Ariane Moffattʼs illustrious career is marked by curiosity – sonic, musical and emotional – and it is contagious. She has built a devoted following in Canada over the past decade, making inroads to France with her evocative blend of electro, pop, soul and rock.

Yet it was underwater that Moffatt made her grand entrance, splashing onto the scene with her 2002 debut Aquanaute. An entrancing collection of post-trip-hop confessionals blending acoustic and electronic textures, sung just above a whisper, the album struck a chord. It sold 120,000 copies and won three ADISQ Awards (Quebecʼs Grammys) including Discovery of the Year and Pop-Rock Album of the Year.

Moffatt seduced the French public with “Je Veux Tout“, the irresistible hit single off her third album Tous Les Sens. Released in April, 2008 the release went on to win a slew of awards at home (the Juno Award for Francophone Album of the Year, four ADISQ awards) and in France (Prix de lʼAcadémie Charles Cros, Prix de la chanson Française).
