Ladies and gentlemen – introducing MA by Ariane Moffatt: Out February 27th on Audiogram, the acclaimed Quebec songbird is now reinventing herself, delving into uncharted electro-pop territory and reaches new heights with the boldest, brightest songs of her career. ‘In Your Body‘ is released today, a track from the coming album that evokes Goldfrapp meets the B-52s with its shuffle-step beat, jazzy synth stabs and sassy lyrics.

MA is, in a way, Ariane’s most personal work. The title comes from the Japanese concept of the ma, which refers to a sensorial experience of negative space or downtime – not as something that separates but rather something that unites. A quiet place allowed her to make an album that is both totally centered and wildly adventurous. MA is written, performed and produced completely by Ariane herself; in her creative space, at studio Planet and at Montrealʼs Hotel2tango studio (Arcade Fire, Barr Brothers, Handsome Furs).

Working both in French and in English felt natural for Moffatt, who lives in Montrealʼs diverse Mile End neighborhood. She has dabbled in the language before; but by recording more than half her new album in English, she positions herself in the ma between her cityʼs two dominant cultures. And she sounds equally at home in each.

Ariane Moffattʼs illustrious career is marked by curiosity – sonic, musical and emotional – and it is contagious. She has built a devoted following in Canada over the past decade, making inroads to France with her evocative blend of electro, pop,soul and rock.
Yet it was underwater that Moffatt made her grand entrance, splashing onto the scene with her 2002 debut Aquanaute. An entrancing collection of post-trip-hop confessionals blending acoustic and electronic textures, sung just above a whisper, the album struck a chord. It sold 120,000 copies and won three ADISQ Awards (Quebecʼs Grammys) including Discovery of the Year and Pop-Rock Album of the Year.
Moffatt seduced the French public with “Je Veux Tout“, the irresistible hit single off her third album Tous Les Sens. Released in April, 2008 the release went on to win a slew of awards at home (the Juno Award for Francophone Album of the Year, four ADISQ awards) and in France (Prix de lʼAcadémie Charles Cros, Prix de la chanson Française).
